Artist Bio:
Dave is an architect, community activist, environmentalist, and painter. He is the owner of Loci Architecture, a design studio in Soho, and the Executive Director of Gowanus by Design, a non-profit proposing new sustainable urban strategies in the neighborhood around the Gowanus Canal. He moved to Brooklyn in 1988 and paints in his studio just down the street in Carroll Gardens from where he lives with his wife and two sons.

Artist Statement:
After I was introduced to drawing and painting at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Skidmore College, and the School of Visual Arts in the 1980s and 90s, I put away the pencils and brushes to focus on my architectural practice and raising a family. Several years ago, my mentor at architecture school died, leaving me with the existential question of how I want to spend the rest of my life. I started painting again, completing several still lifes before moving into a series of "scrapes." My inspirations range from Caravaggio to Julie Mehretu. I paint because I love the meditative experience, the desire to create something new, and learning from my studio mates, Stephen Gaffney and Andrew Thompson.
