Artist Statement:
My work celebrates nature in the urban environment. I advocate for green space and green infrastructure by depicting nature in the city setting and by collaborating with local environmental organizations such as the Gowanus Canal Conservancy and Gowanus Swim Society. My recent "Urbanscape" series was inspired by the GCC and by ecologists such as Eric Sanderson, who authored "Mannahatta", both of whom encourage one to imagine the New York landscape as it looked several hundred years ago. The "Vignettes" zoom in on those species, both native and non-native, that thrive or once thrived in this landscape. My process begins by observing, shooting, and/or sketching my surroundings. Back in the studio I use these digital images and sensory memory to create studio works in oil paint and mixed media.
