Artist Bio:
I am a Brooklyn-born working artist. I've had an art studio in various spaces within grand old 543 Union for years. I returned to NYC in fall of 1980 after earning a BFA in fine art in Massachusetts (studied w/Paul Georges), in time to see the giant Picasso show at MOMA that year. I then earned an MFA in painting from Parsons School of Design - studied with Paul Resika and Leland Bell. In 1992, I moved to Brooklyn from the Lower East Side. I did a one-month residency at Vermont Studio Center (recommended!), and was a First Street Gallery member in Chelsea for a few years culminating in a solo show there in 2007. Had a studio at the gargantuan 94 9th Street studios for one remarkable year - perhaps the closest I've experienced to an actual artists community. Unfortunately, the building owners evicted all the artists just weeks before the 2015 Gowanus Studio Tour - and as of fall 2018 the place is still empty!
I was the chairman for BWAC's waterfront Pier Shows in Red Hook in 2000 and 2001, but lost interest in showing there after BWAC changed leadership, its shows becoming more commercial, amateur and arts & crafts. Nothing wrong with that, just not my cup of tea. I am currently now looking for gallery representation and/or inclusion in appropriate group shows.

Artist Statement:
I believe that if you put stuff up on the walls for people to look at, it should at least be something that is actually visually interesting, and sustainably so. I am most interested in figurative and landscape paintings and drawings that acknowledge the greatest art, past and present, while steering clear of dry technique-oriented methods, illustration, decoration and anti-art. Besides frequenting NYC's wealth of museums and galleries, of course, I am very fortunate to have been able to visit the Louvre, the Musee d'Orsay, London's National Gallery and Tate, the Prado, the Uffizi, the Rijksmuseum, the Kunsthistorisches and Albertina in Vienna, the Gemaldegalerie in Berlin, the Boston MFA and the Barnes Foundation, among others . . . PS - also fascinated by great abstract and mixed media art and sculpture.
