Artist Statement:
We live in a world that wants our constant time and attention. The demands of our jobs, our apps and devices, for transparency, communication, and machine-like living, make necessary an attendant space and place where all of that can be ignored, turned off and tuned out for the sake of self-preservation. The In the Dark drawings are about that space. My project is about our need to escape to a place where we can exist in peace and privacy, enjoying the seemingly outdated amenities like silence and darkness.

My work explores the relationship between rules and play in everyday life. With the In the Dark series, I am using sumi ink and watercolor crayons to make images of people engaging in their daily routines, but in the dark. Alone in a darkened space, a person's mundane activities are not only personal and private but also a little mysterious, and potentially absurd.
