Artist Bio:
Susan Greenstein grew up in Astoria, Queens and has lived and worked in Brooklyn since she was a college student at Pratt Institute. She received her BFA in Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting, and went on to receive her MSE from Queens College. Susan spent the following 12 years illustrating childrens' books and editorial illustrations for newspapers and magazines articles.

Following the birth of her daughter, Susan began to teach art to young children through the organization, Studio in A School for many years. Presently, she teaches art in the lower school at Brooklyn Friends School. Susan has found that teaching keeps her excitement & wonder of art fresh and finds her young students' enthusiasm contagious.

When she is not teaching, Susan dedicates her to time painting on-site with watercolors and oil pastels. She also draws frequently on the subway and around New York City. She is intrigued by the textures and patterns found in community gardens as well as in the local architecture. In the summer, while Susan is traveling, she enjoys painting and drawing a very different type of landscape, architecture and light.

Susan lives with her husband Phil who is also a painter, their daughter, Gina and their cat Kalo.

Artist Statement:
Plein air artist, Susan Greenstein's scenes rarely center on iconic landmarks found in guidebooks, but are determined by a more personal view. With Greenstein's approach, the angle of a roofline is seen from the perspective of the street, while architectural details are upstaged by a flowering garden in the foreground.
Greenstein has said that the experience of working on-site and in the moment is essential to her process. "Everything that happens around me becomes part of the work???honking cars, the feeling of the sun and wind, bits and pieces of conversation. All of these external elements differ from place to place yet find a way of weaving themselves into the painting."
Brooklyn-based Susan Greenstein is a graduate of Pratt Institute and Queens College. She has exhibited extensively in Brooklyn, NY as well as New Hampshire and the Delaware Fine Arts Museum.
