Artist Statement:
As a visual artist I am intrigued by small, unlikely beauties, things often overlooked or stepped upon in nature: curled leaves, ice disappearing from a pond, the pattern of birds' feet in the sand. And the subtler among man-made beauties: cracks in the sidewalk, rusted staples on telephone poles, water stains, objects found on the shoulder of the highway. I turn some of these over in my hand, some of them in my mind, and after a filtering process, they present themselves on the canvas.
I am also a lover of birds and have been painting them for the last decade. My technique is to cover the small canvas in paint, then drag my finger nail or a toothpick through it to create the form of the bird. Because this can be an imprecise method, I am often delighted by the way the image turns out even if it is not what I had planned. I enjoy the element of surprise. I love painting these birds. I continue to add to the flock which currently has 35 members.
