Artist Bio:
Natale Adgnot's aesthetic was formed at the intersection of graphic design, fashion design and fine art. Her artwork is informed by all of these disciplines. Adgnot's career has included stints at Christie's auction house, in Paris haute couture, and teaching at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Her fascination with science and patterns -- both visible and invisible -- combine to create graphic and geometric sculptures and paintings.

Adgnot has lived in the United States, France and Japan. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn.

Artist Statement:
A fascination with patterns, whether visible or invisible, is the common thread weaving through my professional experience in graphic design, fashion and art. Like solving puzzles, I set rules and follow them to their logical (and sometimes absurd) conclusions. My underlying preoccupation with structure and repetition leads me to devise and then decode these riddles over and over again.

My current series DRAWINGS IN THREE DIMENSIONS is an outgrowth of two-dimensional drawings from a daily sketch journal in black and white. These small works hover between drawing and sculpture and are defined by repetitive mark-making within the confines of small panels. Each piece begins with the making of marks which are codified into a sort of visual law, then broken apart and reconstructed as three-dimensional objects.

The ongoing series MINERALS is an examination of cultural and societal stereotyping. It was initially developed in the United States using references from American culture. The series was later reinterpreted to address a Japanese audience following a 2-month research residency at Tokyo Arts and Space. As a dual French/American citizen, I plan to extend the series to encompass references from the cultures of France and French-speaking nations.
