Artist Bio:
Laurie Berg makes work in a variety of forms including dance and performance, jewelry, and collage. Her jewelry, which plays with the juxtaposition of real and fake, new and old, precious and plastic, can be seen around the necks of many dance artists in NYC. She is a co-organizer of AUNTS, co-curated the Movement Research Spring Festival 2017, was the 2016 recipient of "The Tommy" Award and a 2016-17 LMCC Workspace Artist-In-Residence. Recent performance works include scape: Times Square Project (Times Square Arts/Danspace Project, 2018), Charles Atlas Presents: The Kitchen Follies (The Kitchen, 2018), Terrifying Times Call For Terrifying Jewelry (Dixon Place, 2017), and The Mineralogy of Objects (Danspace Project, 2015/16). Artist Statement:
As a dance artist, I see my jewelry as a microcosm of the choreographic structures and collaboration between people, objects and props inherent in my performance pieces. My necklace creations are wearable collage pieces combining repurposed vintage and contemporary jewelry parts, tiny objects, beads, semi-precious stones and metal findings. Both practices speak to my interest in structure, detail, humor and honed absurdity. There is a possibility for contradictions to exist side by side. I am constantly looking for this space. A space that is highly structured and simultaneously fantastical.
