Artist Statement:
Artists Marilyn Palmeri and Daniel Riccuito have been making collaborative large scale multi-paneled mixed media abstract drawings for the past 10 years. These metaphoric works are sometimes inspired by landscape, poetry, literature, ancient and medieval art and experimental film. Often beginning by drawing marks or shapes on a colored ground, the artists respond by layering or simplifying the compositions over the course of the work with trust, freedom and immediacy, allowing for chance and without preconceived motives. Air, light, texture, weight, color and scale are very important elements of the work, resonating emotionally and structurally, fusing and juxtaposing Riccuito's energetic approach with Palmeri's more deliberate style. A recent work titled "Gorgons and Sirens" evokes the historical monstrous nature of women in myth and literature. Another work, "Interior Worlds," is an expression of a vivid and tumultuous interior life in conflict with exterior pressures. These works have never been exhibited.
