Artist Bio:
Brooklyn-based Korean painter Hyun Jung Ahn's work explores non-verbal expression through abstract imagery. After moving to New York and being challenged by the language barrier, Ahn set out to find an alternative way to convey her feelings. Her paintings encapsulate moments in time and the artist's emotional states through the use of shape and color. Ahn earned her first MFA from Duk-Sung Women's University in Seoul and her second MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. These past years alone Ahn exhibited her work throughout the states as well, as internationally in solo and group exhibitions in Italy and Korea. She has participated in many residencies including the Studios at MASS MoCA and the Vermont Studio Center. Ahn currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Artist Statement:
In my current body of work, The Shapes of Mind, I create an indirect language using enigmatic, abstract shapes. They are capsules of time, feelings which I cannot communicate verbally. The different shapes and colors suggest emotions and states of being based on my poems. After I moved to New York, I suffered from the language barrier. This experience allowed me to choose an alternate way to express myself. I am exploring the visual language and I title the series of work as 'Shapes of Mind; What I Wanted to Say'.
