Artist Bio:
Daniela Kostova (b. Sofia, Bulgaria)

Daniela Kostova is an interdisciplinary artist who works with photography, installation, performance and video. Her work addresses issues of geography and cultural representation, the production and crossing of socio-cultural borders, and the uneasy process of translation and communication.

Daniela develops elaborate photo shoots with intricate sets and characters, outputting the images on vinyl, wallpaper or plastic. Larger than life domestic scenes are brought into active connection with the exhibition site, becoming architecture themselves and redefining the space.

Her work is exhibited at venues such as Queens Museum of Art (NY), Kunsthalle Wien (Austria), Institute for Contemporary Art (Sofia), Centre d'art Contemporain (Geneva), Antakya Biennale (Turkey), Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, (Torino), Kunsthalle Fridericianum (Kassel) and others. In 2016 she had a solo show as an A.I.R. Gallery Fellow and was a resident at the Center for Art and Urbanism (ZK/U), Berlin. In 2011, Daniela won the Unlimited Award for Contemporary Bulgarian Art. In 2009, 2007 and 2006 I received travel grants from NYFA, the American Foundation for Bulgaria and the European Cultural Foundation. Reviews include New York Times, Brooklyn Rail, Flash Art, Art in America.

Kostova is Director of Curatorial Projects at Radiator Gallery, Co-Founder of the Bulgarian Collaborative and a Board Member of CEC Artslink, NY.

Artist Statement:

I am an interdisciplinary artist interested in comparing and contrasting different cultural models while looking for points of convergence and emerging hybrid forms. Originally from Bulgaria, I grew up in a homogeneous communist society, participating in the turbulent transition to democracy, and later immigrated to the U.S. My background and personal narrative inform all of my work.

My projects engage with specific sites and communities, and often include participatory elements. I start with a conversation, a found article or an event, which unfolds into a fictional narrative in installations that include photography, sculpture and video.

In my studio I develop elaborate photo shoots with intricate sets and characters, outputting the images on vinyl, wallpaper or plastic. Recent work has assumed a domestic element in its focus on my family. Larger then life photographs are adhered to vernacular architecture in a way that brings the images into active connection with a site. The photographs become a dramatic part of the physical architecture of the gallery, dislocating the viewer and redefining the space.
