Artist Bio:
Groundswell is a NYC-based organization that brings together youth, artists, and community organizations to use art as a tool for social change, for a more just and equitable world.
In 1996, a group of New York City artists, educators, and activists founded Groundswell with the belief that collaborative art-making combines personal expression with the strength of community activism and produces unique and powerful outcomes.
Over twenty years later, more than 500 murals have been completed by Groundswell, working with youth and teaching artists in collaboration with hundreds of community-based organizations, neighborhood groups, and government agencies throughout New York City. The collaborative process behind these compelling artworks demonstrate our enduring belief that art creates community and community creates change. This year, Groundswell is proud to present Between Us, a group show of work from our roster of mural artists and our staff members.

Artist Statement:
What comes between us? There is a constant flux of boundaries, barriers, definitions, and details that we use to construct our identity on both a societal and individual level, and affects both how we interact with the world, and how the world interacts with us. We witness this impact on a political level as the invisible lines that define our borders transform into physical walls, or as the words we use to describe ourselves are written into laws, as well as in our personal interactions in the relationships we build as we set boundaries for ourselves to respect our own mental, emotional, and physical needs. There is history between us. There is hope, and hurt, and things that broke. And there is a vision for the good that could be. Between Us invites artists to reflect on the constructed boundaries that define the world we live within, and how they shape the future we inevitably build together.
